Typically most houses are fitted with a tank water heater. These are the classic design featuring a large cylinder that houses the water. Generally houses are fitted with one of these units however some larger homes have two.
These types of hot water heater are easy to use, inexpensive, and easy to maintain, which is why they have become such a popular model of hot water heater.
The average hot water tank has a lifespan of approximately 10 years. Be sure to have a technician service your hot water heater so it continues to operate at its maximum potential.
These models are generally more expensive than their tanked counterparts, however they come with a variety of advantages. For instance, the tankless hot water heater is much more compact, as it doesn’t need to store water, meaning less chance of a leak flooding your home and are growing in popularity because of their energy efficiency which means there is less cost associated with utilities as the hot water heater doesn’t need to continually fill its water level, instead it only uses the water that you need.
Under the new NAECA regulations, most water heaters will be larger, requiring more space for installation. For example, the diameter of a new unit that has the same gallon capacity as an existing unit may be two or more inches wider. In addition, the height of the new unit with the same gallon capacity as an existing unit may be two or more inches taller.
Manufacturers are making all the necessary improvements so you don’t have to worry about the technology and engineering involved. However, those improvements will impact you in a number of ways and you need to be aware of them when planning for the replacement of existing water heaters.
In order to meet certain efficiency standards, some water heaters will no longer be manufactured. If space is a concern, you may have to install a water heater with a smaller storage capacity or a unit with a similar storage capacity that may be larger in physical size than the existing water heater. The NAECA regulation effective date of April 16th, 2015 applies only to the manufacturer of water heaters.
Under the new NAECA regulations most water heaters will be larger, requiring more space for installation.
