Gas Piping - Photo of Gas MeterNatural gas or Liquid propane, gas distribution systems either comes from a gas pipe that a utility provides, or a gas tank, which is refilled, and located, on the property. Gas is distributed with high pressure, which is 2 lb per square inch and regulated down to ½ lb before it enters the home. The gas is distributed using 1 of 3 types of tubing, copper, black steel, or a corrugated stainless steel product in a yellow pollelethene cover.

There are three main makers of the covered product, Track pipe, Wardflex, and Gastite, all of which are similar in looks but require fittings that will only fit their pipe. Gas piping is sized in pipe diameter for volume. This is determined by adding the total BTU’s of all the gas appliances in your home by the farthest fixture from the meter this determines the size pipe needed to each fixture. Adding additional fixtures without sizing could cause an explosion if standing pilots are present, as well as other factors. It is highly recommended that a licensed plumbing company do any repairs or additions to the gas distribution system. Natural gas in its raw form has no smell or color, the gas utility adds a distinctive smell to the gas in order to tell if leaks are present. If you smell this odor, turn off the gas to that appliance or main and call the gas company immediately. They will tag the fixture and shut off the main. It is your responsibility to call a licensed plumber.
