Sewer pipes are highly susceptible to cracking, clogging, and other damages that are caused by water –seeking roots that can work their way into the joints. Once roots take up residence inside of clay, cast iron and other commonly used types of sewer pipes, they can eventually weaken and destroy the existing sewer lines, causing sewage to back up into the home.
Many homeowners usually make the mistake of snaking the pipes to eliminate the problem, but this not only causes more cracks to develop, but it can actually increase the rate of root growth. Over time this results in even more advanced root growth and damage to the sewer system.
Raw Sewage is not only just a smelly mess to clean up, especially in a home environment, but it can also lead to big health problems if it isn’t taken care of properly. Studies conducted by the EPA on raw sewage have found that it can carry the bacteria from hepatitis and salmonella, to gastrointestinal problems and other infections.
It a sewer line becomes damaged, you could not you could end up with a sewage backup problem that causes potentially dangerous germs to back up into your tub, showers and sinks. For homeowners, and especially those with young children, it’s usually a disgusting and dangerous mess to have to clean up.

Drains stoppages are one of the most common problems in houses and residential buildings. Stoppages can occur for several different reasons and, while all clogs cannot be prevented all the time, there are some simple tips you can use to reduce the chance that you will have a major stoppage.
Limit what you drain
Most drain clogs aren’t caused on one day by one thing that gets dumped down the sink. Rather they are a result of buildup in the pipes that restricts the flow of water until eventually it is simply plugs the entire pipe.
The biggest culprits are grease, and oil. Never pour hand lotions, creams or moisturizers down the sink, even if you are rinsing them down with warm not hot water. Some moisturizing soaps and body washes can actually contribute to sludge in your pipes as well.
Use a drain cover
A drain cover with a screen is a very low cost investment that prevents material and hard objects from getting into the drain. These covers should be kept over the drain when the sink is not in use as well as when you are using the sink. The drain screen can easily be cleaned after each use to keep the water flowing freely.
Make sure you also clean the drain cover after each use to prevent materials and hard objects from getting into the drain.
Have your air conditioning system inspected to make sure it’s operating efficiently, and to diagnose and make simple air conditioning repairs before they become major, costly repairs. Regular maintenance of your air conditioner is a small investment that will give you a great return by keeping you’re air conditioning operating properly, and cooling you home effectively for many years.
James Vito air conditioning inspections cover the following:
- Air flow
- Indoor coil
- Furnace. Boiler
- Geothermal readings
We also replace customer supplied filters, check the fuses, and inspect the electrical safety circuits.
Reminder: change the filters in your air conditioner at least once a month. More often, if you have pets that shed a lot, if you have someone living in your home who’s highly sensitive to allergens, or if some other situation, such as having remodeling done in your home, is creating dirty, dusty conditions.
And, use disposable filters! The filter in your air conditioner traps dirt, dust, pet hair, spores, pollen, etc. in order to remove these from your home as well as from your ac system. Washing a reusable filter will NOT thoroughly clean these contaminants from the filter. Over time, that reusable filter will get a nasty build-up that will make the filter ineffective.
Call James Vito and schedule your inspection today!
It is that time of year! Spring is right around the corner! That means that summer will soon be here as well. Don’t get caught with an underperforming air conditioning system that may be on the verge of breakdown in 90 degree nights and 100 plus degree days.
