More Rain this weekend!

Hopefully everyone survived our previous washout.  Here at Vito we have some tips for our customers that have sump pumps.

Sump pumps are used to pump water out from under the basement, crawlspace or lower floor of your home. Usually the source of the water is rainwater that accumulates faster than the ground can absorb it.  The water accumulates in a sump and is pumped away from the home before it can flood you home.

Make sure that the sump pump is working! If you have a sump pump in your home Call Vito and have one of our professional plumbers take a look at your current pump. Having your sump pump and other plumbing related equipment maintained can be crucial to your homes safety.

It is very important that you have a battery backup sump pump! If you sump pump loses power, heaven forbid, you must have a back-up. A battery powered back up sump pump is a must for the occasional power outages or your primary pump dies out.

Start your spring cleaning with an HVAC Maintenance

After what seems like a colder and longer winter than average everyone in the DMV is yearning for warmer weather, so it is no surprise that many home owners are beginning spring cleaning chores. Before everyone starts busting out the dust mops you’ll want to make sure that your heating and cooling systems are up to speed. Start your spring cleaning with HVAC maintenance to ensure that your business or household is safe, healthy and comfortable in any type of weather.

Change HVAC Air Filters

HVAC air filters not only sift out particulates from the air that you breathe but they also help stop dirt, dust and grime from accumulating on the system components. Dirty air filters impede air circulation, which means that your heater or air conditioner has to run longer to reach desired temperatures. Protect your HVAC system investment, lower your energy bills and enhance your indoor air quality by replacing filters every month during the heating and cooling seasons.

For peace of mind call James Vito Inc. for your annual HVAC inspection. Call now and schedule an annual inspection, or ask to speak to our field supervisors for a new unit installation.

Sewer pipes are highly susceptible to cracking, clogging, and other damages that are caused by water –seeking roots that can work their way into the joints. Once roots take up residence inside of clay, cast iron and other commonly used types of sewer pipes, they can eventually weaken and destroy the existing sewer lines, causing sewage to back up into the home.

Many homeowners usually make the mistake of snaking the pipes to eliminate the problem, but this not only causes more cracks to develop, but it can actually increase the rate of root growth. Over time this results in even more advanced root growth and damage to the sewer system.

Raw Sewage is not only just a smelly mess to clean up, especially in a home environment, but it can also lead to big health problems if it isn’t taken care of properly. Studies conducted by the EPA on raw sewage have found that it can carry the bacteria from hepatitis and salmonella, to gastrointestinal problems and other infections.

It a sewer line becomes damaged, you could not you could end up with a sewage backup problem that causes potentially dangerous germs to back up into your tub, showers and sinks. For homeowners, and especially those with young children, it’s usually a disgusting and dangerous mess to have to clean up.

Our professional technicians at James Vito Plumbing and Heating will conduct a complete inspection of your home sewer pipes to determine the cause of the issue, assess the scope of work and provide you with an estimate to fix the problem.  Call James Vito Inc. for a free estimate on your sewer replacement today!

What not to put down the drain

If you have a garbage disposal, you’ve probably take full advantage of how it can get rid of waste. However, while your garbage disposer can handle a lot of different foods, there are some that our plumbing service experts say you shouldn’t put down the drain:

There are common household fats that can clog your pipes and cause sewer backups. Sometimes you can even end up with raw sewage overflowing into your home. To avoid such situations do not put these fats down the drain:

  • Cooking oil
  • Lard
  • Fats from meat
  • Dairy Products
  • Butter, margarine, shortening

You also want to avoid putting foods that have a tendency to expand when adding water. They can get stuck and get clogged. The things include:

  • Flour
  • Semolina
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Potatoes or potatoes skins

Things that do not break down with water and are so small that they can accumulate in your pipes can cause stoppages such as:

  • Coffee grounds
  • Tea leaves
  • Egg shells

  • Inspect your water heater – especially if it’s on the older side! Check for signs of rust colored water or extra moisture around the water heater’s base.

Drains stoppages are one of the most common problems in houses and residential buildings. Stoppages can occur for several different reasons and, while all clogs cannot be prevented all the time, there are some simple tips you can use to reduce the chance that you will have a major stoppage.

Limit what you drain

Most drain clogs aren’t caused on one day by one thing that gets dumped down the sink. Rather they are a result of buildup in the pipes that restricts the flow of water until eventually it is simply plugs the entire pipe.

The biggest culprits are grease, and oil. Never pour hand lotions, creams or moisturizers down the sink, even if you are rinsing them down with warm not hot water. Some moisturizing soaps and body washes can actually contribute to sludge in your pipes as well.

Use a drain cover

A drain cover with a screen is a very low cost investment that prevents material and hard objects from getting into the drain. These covers should be kept over the drain when the sink is not in use as well as when you are using the sink. The drain screen can easily be cleaned after each use to keep the water flowing freely.

Make sure you also clean the drain cover after each use to prevent materials and hard objects from getting into the drain.

Have your air conditioning system inspected to make sure it’s operating efficiently, and to diagnose and make simple air conditioning repairs before they become major, costly repairs. Regular maintenance of your air conditioner is a small investment that will give you a great return by keeping you’re air conditioning operating properly, and cooling you home effectively for many years.

James Vito air conditioning inspections cover the following:

  • Air flow
  • Indoor coil
  • Condenser
  • Furnace. Boiler
  • Humidifier
  • Geothermal readings

We also replace customer supplied filters, check the fuses, and inspect the electrical safety circuits.

Reminder: change the filters in your air conditioner at least once a month.  More often, if you have pets that shed a lot, if you have someone living in your home who’s highly sensitive to allergens, or if some other situation, such as having remodeling done in your home, is creating dirty, dusty conditions.

And, use disposable filters!   The filter in your air conditioner traps dirt, dust, pet hair, spores, pollen, etc. in order to remove these from your home as well as from your ac system.  Washing a reusable filter will NOT thoroughly clean these contaminants from the filter.  Over time, that reusable filter will get a nasty build-up that will make the filter ineffective.
